Power Generation
Solving the energy trilemma of the low-carbon, affordable and the secure supply of energy will require a complete rethinking of future energy systems. Maximising the sustainable provision of energy requires that energy systems should strive to satisfy human needs in an economically viable, environmentally benign and socially acceptable way. Given the major uncertainties facing future energy systems, there is a need to establish flexible solutions to allow for the local supply and demand of energy, future changes in supply and demand, and technology developments. Primary energy sources that are currently dominated by the use of fossil fuels need to switch to renewables and waste-to-energy systems.

Process Utility Systems
Process utility systems are the largest consumers of energy on most processing sites, resulting in also being the largest sources of greenhouse gases. A significant component of process utility systems is power generation. However, on most processing sites typically 60% of the energy is required in the form of heat, rather than power. This brings significant differences between the objectives of stand alone power generation systems and process utility systems. Like power generation systems, the performance of utility systems can be improved through operational optimization that can be offline or online, and possibly retrofit to improve the performance further. However, the challenge of achieving net zero carbon emissions requires a complete paradigm change.
